Default I hate TV

TV - one of the greatest inventions of the 21st century. I wont deny that it certainly has provided some ground breaking news and entertainment over the years. Like most of us, I have spent plenty of Sundays in a vegetative state in its presence as well.

It is, however, quite disturbing to me the damage TV has caused society. Far too many people rely on it to replace good old fasioned imagination. It has become a great babysitter for parents who are to tired or lazy to spend quality time with thier children. There a so many more worthwhile things to do than sit in front of the tube and too many people don't realize that.

The worst part is that 95% of what's aired on TV is absolute garbage. I spend about 10 dollars a month to have the trash removed from my curb and $59 a month to have more crap pumped in via the cable line. Believe me, if I wasn't married, there would be no cable service in this house.

I know - "If you don't like it don't watch it." Well, I don't and that doesn't change the fact that my wife and step daughter do. The TV is on almost 24-7 in my house. I love my wife and if that's what she desires to do with her free time, I wont say anything about it (other than the ocassional request to "turn that damn thing down"). That still dosen't change the fact that I hate it with a passion.

I am with you. Quality programming, whatever that is of course, just doesn't exist for me anymore. Thanks to my poor hearing from an earlier career and determination I have learned to tune it out.

I haven't had cable TV in my home for nearly a decade now. We have a small TV, but only use it to watch tapes and DVD's. (We do have a fine collection of stuff, however -- Mainly science fiction, comedy, and cartoons.) Even that doesn't get watched very much, as the sheer noise and action on the screen tends to overwhelm me.

The last time we watched broadcast TV in this house was the 9/11/01 news coverage. After slightly more than an hour of it, my daughter started feeling physically ill. We turned off the set and essentially abandoned all TV network programming in our home.
