Default Catholic wife wants baptism....

Well she's not my wife yet, but she has told me that if/when we have kids that she would like to have them baptized. The only problem is that I don't believe in god and I actually dislike the catholic church. If it were up to me, my child would be able to make his/her own decision. I would educate them on the different religions as well as my beliefs and allow them to decide on their own, but my girlfriend doesn't agree with me. I'd like some other perspectives on this situation.

Baptise the kid and raise him to make his own decisions anyway. Educate him on all the different religions, and your own beliefs and let him decide. If he decides to follow Catholicism, then he has been properly baptised. If he doesn't, then a baptism doesn't matter. If you don't believe in the church's practices then they don't affect you.

Yeah. I don't think it matters in any way. As long as you teach the kid to think objectively and to be open to everything, I don't see the hurt. Just don't shove things down his throat. I know too well what that's like..

Do you mean that your girlfriend intends to prevent you from educating your children on different religions and your own beliefs?

My perspective is that y'all need some pre-marriage counseling. Marriage has enough challenges without actively disliking each other's religious or spiritual beliefs. The successful mixed faith unions I am aware of involve a deep respect for each other's beliefs.
