Lightbulb Mumbai: India’s commercial and cultural capital

Mumbai or Bombay as it was formerly known is the capital of the state of Maharashtra on the western coast of India. It has been a major sea port down the ages and is considered to be both the commercial and cultural capital of India.

Mumbai is home to several premier financial institutions like the Bombay Stock Exchange and the Reserve Bank of India. It is also the center of the largest film industry in the world that churns out over a thousand films annually. Theatre, dance and music are the other cultural events that ‘Mubaikars’ watch and participate in avidly with annual events like the Prithvi Theatre’s drama festival being eagerly awaited affairs. It is home to some of the richest Indians as well as some of the poorest with Dharavi having the dubious distinction of being the largest slum in Asia. But what really drives Mumbai is its middle class, a hard working, professional group of people coming from various parts of India to live in the city and assume the identity of the ‘Mumbaikar’. They are the real force behind the consumer culture of the city and believe in the old saying that hard work pays dividends.

Mumbai enjoys several infrastructural facilities like a local train service linking various points of the sprawling city. It is well connected to the world by air and sea. Though the roads are mostly good it suffers from the normal metro city problems of traffic congestion. Lately the image of Mumbai as a city of international standards has been tarnished by the annual flooding that occurs during the monsoons. Mumbai is home to several major industrial houses and the IT sector is one of the many industries doing well here. Outsourcing is a major industry and in the field of Website Designing Mumbai has few competitors.
