GX,

Obviously we are not going to change each others minds on this matter. Is it possible that our differences just boil down to you thinking of the Brights Movement as something somewhat similar to a religion and my thinking of it as simply a tool to help agnostics, atheists, freethinkers, humanists, etc work together for our common good? Getting hung up in the details of who may and may not call themselves a Bright is pointless to me (and I'd bet a lot of other Brights). If someone wants to call themself a Bright and they want to work towards equality for us all, then I will be happy to work with them whatever the details of their personal beliefs. (I'm also happy to work with them if they don't want to call themselves a Bright. The calling themselves a Bright part is not really important either) My "zeal" is to make sure people who would like to know about the Brights Movement find out about it and if interested, learn how to get the best results from the tool, not to change their beliefs about anything. In more general terms my "zeal" is for making sure that we put our trivial differences aside and communicate and work together to achieve political and social status consistent with our numbers. (and by "our" I don't mean just people who call themselves Brights. I mean all of us agnostics, atheists, freethinkers, humanists, naturalists, etc)

You missed my point entirely. All I was saying was that you cannot believe in a God and claim to be a bright. It is the same thing as starting an organization called "the gays" and stating in your charter that to be considered "gay" you need to have an exclusive interest in same sex relationships and no interest whatsoever in opposite sex relationships. Now, someone who is considered "straight" i.e. exclusively interesed in opposite sex relationships comes along and wishes to join the organization and proclaims to the world that he is "gay". Working with an organization is one thing but proclaiming that you are gay when you are straight is a whole other matter. This doesnt work. It is diametrically opposed and is not accurate. There are differences. Deal with it!

It is obvious that your personal beliefs dictate otherwise regardless of what the organization says. If you wish to believe that the brights is an all inclusive organization and that anyone can consider themself as a bright regardless of their beliefs, then go right ahead. At this point I now think of the brights as some kind of religion or cult as it seems to me that you are brainwashed by your enthusiasm for this shiny new movement. More importantly, you have allowed your enthusiasm for the movement to corrupt your judgment.

You can try to twist these words all you like and say that the definition is so broad that anyone can become a bright regardless of their beliefs and that if you just count yourself among us all the worlds problems will go away, but the bottom line is that whoever runs that website has clearly defined the boundaries of what is and what is not a bright.

If you wish to continue proselytizing to the world that black is white and 2+2=5 that is your prerogrative but I now must change back to my original assertion of your claims as deception. It may not be intentional or malicious, but bottom line that’s what it is if your saying that anyone with any belief system can be a bright.

I no longer wish to debate you about this as you seem to have your mind made up. Any more discussion between us about this would be a waste of our time. I wish you well in your brightly pursuits!

I think we agree that this discussion is going nowhere. Best wishes.
