I am intrigued by this statement. How specifically, would you "make it harder" to marry and to divorce? Would you require intense professional counseling prior to both? Would you legally redefine the concept of marriage in the first place? Would you change the laws or set age limits? Please elaborate if you dont mind...
*gets out pointer and power point...

1) pre-marital counseling where questions of beyond the wedding plans are discussed. Such as financial, religion, child rearing and morals are questioned. (Lecter and I have started talking about those exact questions. We want to be on the same page. And doing this so far ahead of time allows us to work out our ways now before it's a month after marriage and I find out I don't have access to our bank account!)

2) I would make sure the families of the spouses also be involved somehow in some conversations. How many times are in laws a problem? A lot.

Hm..for now that's all I got till I think more on it.

When my wife and I got married back in 1999 we were told we had to undertake one session with a marriage counsellor. I can't recall if that was because we wanted to get married in a church (the counsellor was Anglican I think, but the main requirement was that we see a counsellor regardless of affiliation).

At the session we were asked those sorts of questions that you raise Geshti. We found it all rather unnecessary as we had already spoken about most of the topics they raised, but I can see that it may do some good for some people (although only one 1hr session is a bit light on really if you want to get some real dialogue happening!).

Another restriction in Australia is that you need to submit your legal 'intent to marry' paperwork at least one month before the wedding date (so no Vegas weddings for us!!).

Geshti!
I LOVE your sense of humor and enthusiasm! Its quite infectious! Keep it up!

Oh yeah, you made some good points too! If states are unable to enact such laws, the clergy should step up to the plate on this....
BTW...congrats on your engagement! Its sounds like you both found "the one". I wish you both joy.
