A great example of recent cultural media would be "Inception". Without spoiling too much about the plot, I'll just say that "water" is a very prevalent theme in this film.
Criss Angel created illusions where he appeared to walk across the surface of a swimming pool & the largest man-made reservoir.
If you're familiar with video games at all you'll find that water is a central theme in many games as well:
-- God of War - You obtain Poseidon's Trident which gives you the ability to breathe underwater. You eventually end up fighting Poseidon himself
-- Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands - One of the main powers of the prince is the ability to freeze waterfalls & water-spouts to use them as walls to run on & polls to swing on.
-- Flow - This is a downloadable mini-game where you actually play as a form of life evolving from the simplest form to the most complex form in an underwater environment.
These are just a few of the many examples of how water is used as a literary device in our every day cultural media.
