What is half "pom"?

When I think of an "Aussie" it is more of an old western cowboy, kind of a fun loving, beer loving fellow .... quick to fight or make love ...

Oh and we mustn't forget that an "Aussie" accent makes many a woman .... hmmmm .... lets say ...... "hot" perhaps is the word I am looking for .... it seems that the accent is a definite turn on for a lot of women

Aussie men seem to possess a cockiness and sexiness that is appealing to many women

Hmm well how to answer this, without making it worse, and it all being a bit cramped here makes it a bit hard on my eyes, but I'll try.

First of all, I'm not being offensive on purpose, english is my third/fourth language and I have not mastered it yet, so naturaly I would say my vocabulary is a bit low. yay defending myself should be the best way to start..or maybe not.

No, I don't find it fun, I find it based on my experiences so far, you are right that I probably haven't met that many, but the point still stands.
Quote:
then you have the audacity to say how could anyone think to misconstrue your words .....well first off pup, I've been around this forum long enough and read enough to know how amercicans are thought of around the world. I have seen first hand how we are perceived .... your high and mighty label .... oh pleeeeeeaaaazzzzzz!!!
Yeah I have the audacity to think that, coz I can't at the time see anything wrong with it, but having read your response I see why you get angry/upset/whatever you call it, but I still don't think I said anything wrong (yeah I know it sounds weird but that is how I am)

Quote:
I could care less if you think I am over reacting, defensive or any other lame adjective that happens to be in your vocabulary ....
Good then we are two about that
Quote:
I notice from your profile that you neglect to say what country you are from so I can only assume you are a) in hiding because you have pissed someone off or b) you don't want to divulge your country so that no one can prejudge you .... whatever dude.
Or c) I'm new on the forum and haven't filled out teh profile section yet, I have in other posts talked about where I'm from and such, so I'm not keeping it secret, I just haven't fixed the profile yet. But if you want to know, (I advice using google) I'm from the Faroe Islands.
EDIT: well it seems I already had filled it out with nonsense, it has now been edited so it fulfills your standards.
Quote:
You've talked to a few tourists or a couple of students and you think you know americans, know the people ... give me a break, do you really think the everday american has the money to travel overseas? hardly! The average amercican is lucky if they can take their family to Disney World Seeing Europe isn't a high priority for most ....
I know the average american family isn't that lucky, has there been anything so far which has indicated that I'm thinking they are? I fail to see it anywhere.
Quote:
this country is a young democracy and we make many mistakes .... boy do we make mistakes but Amercicans are not baby eating monsters .. we care about our children, our families, our pets and everything else just like you and your fellow countrymen ... we get good presidents and we get bad ones ... once in a while a totally lousy one gets in office ... do I need to say his name ....
well on the other end of the table are we(atleast in some parts), we do have the worlds oldest parliment, but it still doesn't work. Did I indicate that you didn't take care of your families? I doubt it. I have lost all trust in my fellow country men, heck one year ago it was still legal to beat up gays on the streets. As for good and bad presidents, I can only remember us having bad. And the bible has more power here than it has in the states I sh't you not.
Quote:
The fact of the matter is that should you ever travel the united states you would never, ever, ever be treated as horrible as Americans are treated overseas ... our country is so vast ... you have no idea ... you could go from Maine to California and meet such a diverse population it would amaze you! Where one person visiting the US might be offended by East coast rigidness they might be equally offended by a Southerner's hugging and calling everyone "ya' all come on over for some sweet tea and sit a spell" .... or you might come to the midwest where cookouts, camping and water skiing are the big summer time events .... You could go to the Rockies where they love to snow ski and hike or Louisiana where snakes are in the trees and alligators in the water ... hell go to Florida and you'll be in the retirement capital of the world.
I understand that, that there is probably far more diversity in a country with some millions of people, than there is in a country with barely 50.000, and half that number live abroad coz the conditions are too bad in one way or the other back here.
Quote:
Name calling you say ???? Ha, Ha very funny ... you've met or talked to what less than 50 Americans and that makes you knowledgeable about the other millions? What most American think about those "across the pond" is that you hate us and condemn us without knowing us ... you judge the people by it's leaders and their foreign policy.
yeah 50 or so sounds about right, and no it doesn't make me knowledgeable about the rest. And you are wrong too, you judge us by what you hear in the media or where ever about you hear it, just like we judge you by your politics, we are even there, I personally despise the foreign policy you guys have, but I have several friends over there (read 75% of those 50 before mentioned).
Ok this part turned out bad somehow, yeah shot me.

Quote:
You say you've been through so much in your life and boo hoo ... join the crowd pup, there are plenty of us out here who haven't been born with a silver spoon in our mouths and have struggled in life ... you have no monopoly on misery and it's company.
I'm not saying that I have been through more than others, far from it, I'm just saying that I have been trough my part. Have you been bullied, beaten, teased for three quarters of your life? and each and every morning thinking that today is the day you quit it? And all that time you just know you are alone, and the day you find someone who cares about you, you notice the that that person is in an even worse place than you, and is already sitting there with the razor and pills, and even though you want to kick the bucket yourself, you do whatever it takes to keep that person alive coz you care more about him/her than about yourself and it is only through text not once face to face, and everytime there goes more than a day without sound from that person and you start fearing the worst?

Sorry for yelling, but that last part there just hit a note somewhere, I have noticed that you are a nurse, so you have probably saved or helped saving some few lives in your time, and I applaud you for that. But there are some people out there who are not so damn lucky to have one such as you to help them remember that, and they have to struggle through it on their own.

Quote:
I maintain that many of you "across the pond" will defend plenty of others in the world but love to lump Americans into one big basket of miscreants .... so before you think I am overly sensitive or misinterpreting your words, reread what you wrote and see in it's not just a wee bit on the condescending side .... plus pup, you come off as passive - aggressive in your verbiage .... Oh and BTW ... you're not that funny so don't quit your day job either that or the hmor was lost in translation ... LOL
Sounds like the truth, and I have reread what I wrote and I still fail to see the bad part. Though I see what you think are the bad parts, two sides of the same case I believe.

I am passive yes, I don't want to hurt anyone like I have been hurt, for the most part by words. The aggressive part is not intentional it is just how I am.
I have a weird/bizzare/morbid sense of humour I grant you that, but it is still fun from my side.

And don't you dare call me pup one more time, I've been called more names than there is in the damn phone book, I have my own name.

I atleast have the balls to use my own name on this forum and any other I am on, you are the one who is hiding behind a false name.

Sorry, this went off topic at some point I guess, and turned into something personal, which I doubt was the intention by either you or me.

Cheers

Default Strike a nerve did I?

see how one little word can cause pain? calling you pup is a term of endearment ... meaning "young one" not as in an "old dog" like me ... easy to take offense isn't it when things are lost in translation ...... kinda got your knickers in a twist calling you pup didn't it tho' ..... condescending can run both ways ... truce

I have traveled overseas, Mexico and very extensively in the US, the only states I haven't been in are Alaska and Maine (too damn cold in either of those states). I haven't always been a nurse.

I come form an upper middle class family and until I was 14 years old I was beaten and abused (not sexually, that came later) and left home at 16, I have been homeless and lived in my car or crashed on friends floors, spent two years addicted to heroin and I can tell you equally sad stories just as you can. I tried the suicide route but evidently sucked at it because I am still here.

What I have learned is that life can throw what ever it wants at you and you can either capitulate like a puss or you can crawl up onto your knees and then eventually stand again, hold your head up and say nothing will break me again, I am a reed in the wind I will bend I will not break .. that wind can often be stronger than anticipated and the reed will topple but it can survive .... rolling over and dying is easy, it's living that will test your fortitude.

I am 5' 2' and I have been bullied and had many a person attempt to grind me down ... to those I say bring it on and don't be stingy with the hot peppers .... my advice is remember the past for what it is, the past and that which you were is not who you are now ... it may have help make you who you are but it doesn't have to be something that holds you back or down ...

ok I am done with the biography and the words of wisdom .... but I still maintain that I am far more amusing than you ..... but hey I have had more years to entertain the masses ....

BTW my name is Deb Dodd as in Debra ... so I hide behind no name.

Chat with you later ... pup!

Oh, and I looked up where the Faroe Islands exists .... 260 days of rain and only 47,000 people on 18 main islands ..... sounds like a very isolated place.

The city I live in has a population over of 750,000 people add in the suburbs and you add another 250,000 people ....

Also, mutton and pilot whale are consider good eats???? ugh!!!! That explains a lot to me

Pom = Prisoner of Her Majesty, apparently it was stencilled on the convicts uniforms here in Australia when it was a penal colony, now it's used here as a (playfully) derogatory nickname given to British people

I actually have a weiiird accent, part North-western English/North Eastern Welsh, part nasally aussie. Perhaps it's a shame I don't have the full accent, though

I do have to clarify I don't have anything against American people as a group, several of my favourite lecturers/tutors/students at my university are Americans and they are absolutely lovely people. Really it's more of a 'national attitude' thing, I find I have them for all countries and regions of the world and I kick myself every time I realise this. And I'm studying Anthropology this year, so I should know better

As for the Faroe islands... Bjarki insists on showing me photographs of the landscape there, never ceases to amaze me with the sheer natural beauty of the place, I recommend looking up a few pictures on the web.

yep thats the place I am in, and you don't get better food than whale,(though the polution of the seas is making it unhealthier for each second that passes, goes for fish too)

I agree on a truce, you couldn't know what I have been through and I can't know what you have been through, and as you said you have rather likely more experience in life. And I'm probably just a bit more bitter here, but such is life and I'm still partly in that bad phase of it. But I'm soldiering on here.

Truce and friends sounds nice, I have more than enough enemies in real life, to add to them on the net.

Cheers

Everything's forgiven but nothing forgotten(not pointed at you in particular, just a thing I use to say after such discussions)

Okay guys .... lamb is okay but I'm not one for oily fish or the whole pickeled herring thing While I am not a vegitairan I do prefer veggies and fruits ..... I am not familiar with piolet whales and how they fit in ther sub species of the bigger whales but hey eat what ya' want. Some people eat cockroaches and love them ... yuck. I think every culture has their ethnic dishes that grosses other people out. My Mom s from the South and insisted we eat liver and onions at the minimum every other week so I cast no stones when it comes to food .... I may shudder in disgust but hungry enough most would eat one another .... but that's another thread!!!Wulfric: Pom ... awesome! I love to learn those quaint historical everyday man kind of tidbits!!! Also, you'd do well with US women ... they are suckers (idiots) for any Aussie accent probably even a bad one

Aha!

A thread I can relate to!
I have lived in Ireland for a summer, and they find americans, and I'm generally speaking, "Fat and Lazy".
Which I agree, in a stereotypical way. Due to our media, fast food, lazy lifestyles, and "freedom of choice".
I love going and visiting around the world because it is an honest eye opener. If you have any aspirations of travelling the world, Please do so. I mean anybody who's taking the time to read this, It will open your mind.

often the fat and lazy are the only ones that can afford to travel abroad.

I so wish others would meet "real Americans" for a change.

we do have an incredible amount of fat, lazy people that collect welfare and do nothing more than whine about what the government isn't giving them but those are not the Americans I hang with nor associate with .... okay I'll admit there are a few chubs in the group but none are grossly obese and living off government cheese ..... In the states we make it too easy to be poor .... before a bunch of you go crazy on me let me finish ..... we allow so many people the freedom to hide behind our laws ....

I've seen crack head women, living off the government checks when they are pregnant with their 9th kid, which is taken away from them because of course at the time of delivery they test positive for crack and the baby is taken away .. the crack whore walks away, leaves her baby, goes off to heal, do more crack and make another crack baby for my taxes to take care of ... pisses me off ...

I've a big problem with this mentality .... get off your lazy asses and go to work, stop having friggin babies you can't afford and give me back the money you lazy bitches cost me each paycheck ..... okay now for the flip side of this ... my son is adopted and his bio mom just died a while back from crack abuse so it's a two edged sword for me .... on one hand I got Alex out of the deal but on the other ..... dilemma, dilemma ..... she didn't do crack while she was pregnant with him that was before and after but you get where I am going with this .....

I wish there was a magic bullet to fix the world woes but in the end only time will change ..... look how far we've come .....

I love to travel but don't say I'm from the US ... I usually go for Canada as my "home" ... seems like everyone likes Canadians!
