love is a hollow word, not becuse it has no meaning, but becuse it is overfilled with them, it means almost anything, therefore nothing specific, in general it is a word of affection.
personally love is a very abstract thing, it has no you, no I, it simply has is. its an understanding, perhaps its my world view. its hard to explain.

| AB. There is not an answer to this question  That's the point. It's a koam designed to free your mind from the world of categories of though that it is bound in and defined by and connect you to the transcendent root of all things.
Zen teachings tell you to simply consider the question. It's intentionally an absurdity. The result is "Aum/Ohm/Om"... This is about as close as you get to an answer where the Buddhist teachings are concerned.
Ironically, Jesus' comments above, particularly when combined with "Love thy enemy" sound quite a bit like the "one hand clapping" concept. These comments of christ seem to directly illustrate how we are bound to dichotomies such as "love and hate" and "enemies and friends."
Another that should be discarded is that of "you" the creation and "God" the creator. That's what jesus discarded (and thus said "I and the Father are One" in the book of John).
Love/Hate is just another dichotomy. It makes sense that God minded people would consider Love to be divine. They still think of a distinction between people and the divine. The true understanding that Jesus and the Zen teachings point you at is that Love and Hate are all one and inseparable and could not exist without one another. Hitler is as much love as ghandi is love. Just as they are both hate. It is because they are one just as we all are with them.

You are totally correct about the purpose the Buddhist questioning.
But that’s why I am not a Buddhist; I always give them an answer.
Weather they need one or not. 
I do not totaly agree with your last three paragraphs, but the differences are small.
The sound of one hand clapping is the human experience.

The concept of " Love " does not exist, it is used as another word for hormonal attraction.
I like to ****, I don't need to be in " Love " to **** and enjoy it.
I also don't need to be in " Love " to get married.
My intention of getting married involves me finding a woman I can trust and control, in a good way, I'm not going to be a manipulative asshole.
But in the general sense strong " Love " is very harmful and dangerous because if you're strongly in " Love " with somebody and they accept your love but they don't feel as strongly they could very well exploit your " Love " as it would be used because you are almost in a sense addicted. | |

I suggest instead of "love hurts" .... just rub some dirt on the pain until the next love comes along .... it usually does ... it's the time between love's that in painful .....

i've been thinking it might just be is.
but that seems like a different concept for the same word,
but other concepts seem less cool.

but other concepts seem less cool. | sure there is one sided love .... it's called infatuation, lust, stalker .... love has various forms ..... you love your parents ... you might not like them but you love them .... there are degree of love .... I love certain friends but would I give them a kidney kind of love? I'd give my one sister a kidney but not my other sister or my brother kind of love .... I think love is one of the most complex of all emotions and has so many shades of gray .... just my opinion ..
