Default Catholic Church

I just wanted to understand something that has bothered me for awhile and I hope that someone can help me. I am not a Catholic but I recently went to a Vegas night at a Catholic church. Now call me nieve but when I went I thought we would be playing for tickets you could turn in for prizes or just prizes in genera. I was shocked to see that you were gambling for actual money but the kicker for me was that they were also serving alcohol. Now I have no problem with this in any way in general but does this not seem to go againest the Catholic religion. It just didn't seem like something that should be promoted in the church. Just was wondering what others thought of this?

It does. Nothing against Catholics, but sometimes their religion can be a little contradictory. For example, I just read today that they have found St. Paul under a basilica. They plan on unearthing it and putting it on display so people will be able to "see and touch it." Doesn't this qualify for disturbing the dead? St. or not, I though you had to respect the rights of the dead!

Saints seem to be the exception to that rule, FourBear - and that has much to do with the mysticism surrounding them according to Catholic tradition. Their bones are considered relics that may have special properties - healing, for example. Seeing the bones and perhaps touching them may allow a miracle to happen - a miracle given to a person through the vehicle of the bones by God.

I don't think Catholics necessarily have anything against alcohol. I used to work for a preist who enjoyed wine quite a bit.

I don't know about the saint thing. They should be entitled to the same rights as the rest of us. It just seems pretty selfish (to me, it's just my opinion after all) that we feel the need to put their sarcophagi on display with the hopes that miracles may be granted.

Tater, in your posts were you referring more to the gambling going on?

Agreed. I consider myself "Catholic by culture" having grown up with and around Catholics and then later working for a Catholic social service agency for a number of years.

Most of the Catholics I know have little or no issue with drinking or gambling. Vegas Night and Bingo were both hosted by the Catholic church in my neighborhood. After those occasions it was not uncommon to meet up with your church friends at the local bar for a late night beer! Father Ken was there most nights playing chess at a corner table, anyway... beer in hand, and likely taking bets as to who would win.

I Have no reputation
Nothing to loose.

Catholicism is an affront to reason.
It wallows in riches while the children of catholic poor die by the thousands.

It is an affront to sanity.
IS? st vitas's penis a holy relic?

It is an affront ot morallity
Was not the inquisition a catholic crusade to DESTROY any who
questoned catholicism?

It is an affront to logic.
God is 3 things..? a trinity?
WHo decided that? How stupid are humans to believe that a god is 3
things 'understood' by man.
We dont know what gravity is, yet we know what god is?

Catholicism is the richest religion on earth.
It OWNS 100's of billions of dollars worth of land and posessions.
It is no more likely to enter heaven than a camel
[throught that proverbial eye]

A true catholic is a moron.
Not because of any of the above.
But because a true catholic says
One who takes their own life will burn in hell forever.

They claim dominion over your right to YOUR life.
They assume rights and conditions on MY life, and yours.

F**K them

That could be said of most, if not all, religions. But like you said, Piglet - the Catholic Church has an enormous amount of money, power, and influence and that is indeed precisely why I find it scary despite my understanding of it.

And I hear they're going to wire him up to a computer and animate his limbs to make him sing "Long Tall Sally" with a background of flashing coloured lights when a coin is inserted..
Ha ha ha I love catholics, their churches and homes are so full of religious statues and bric-a-brac they look like cheap 'made in Hong Kong' fancy goods warehouses

Ha ha ha, Jesus said "The flesh alone has no value whatsoever, it's only the soul within that counts"..

My parents are dead, so are my grandparents, aunts, uncles,a nephew but I've forgotten whether most were cremated or buried somewhere but that's because I really don't care where their remains or their ashes are, its not important to me..
Likewise I couldn't care less what happens to my mortal remains, an unmarked grave would be good enough for me..
Actually I've toyed with the idea of being buried in a bio-degradeable cardboard box in a pets cemetery like a Kentucky Fried Chicken and have a vicar say the words over me - "We lay Mick to rest, dust to dust, ashes to ashes, cluck-cluck-cluck"...
