Even though the religious might disagree with you, I think you're absolutely right. I read some posts after yours and some think that religion can't be compared with alcohol/drugs because religion supossedly is not harmful........what?????

Religion is one great cause of harm in our today's society, and religion is probably even more harmful than alcohol and drugs because religious people have the "excuse" to do what they do -steal, cheat, lie, sexually abuse children- either in the name of the "Lord" or because "Satan" made them do those things, and it that way the damage goes on and on and on.

Don't forget HC they have the way to feel pious again by begging for God's forgiveness and in their minds recieving it!

Mhmm. The ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card. Oh, I'm going to heaven because I'm more moral and I believe in God, but if ever I don't do what I'm supposed to, it's okay because God will forgive me and then I can just go and do it again. Wow.

Edit: Plus, alcohol is fun!!

I once had a Christian tell me online(not sure which denomination, possibly fundamentalist) that even child-rapists/killers, can achieve spiritual immortality with their god if they repent.I can't think of any belief more disturbing and immoral such as that of these Christian's.

Many religious belief is simpyl a way to avoid responsibility.

Thank you for your post, really. We need more people to think like you do. If we all shared this sentiment, the world would be a better place to live.

You're absolutely right. Pedophiles never change, they don't regret sexually abusing children, it's proven fact that they are sick for life. And those religions that have a god that "forgives" that kind of sickness are a menace to healthy and moral society.

Thank you, and I thoroughly agree.

Agreed, and agreed. I asked a fundamentalist today, and it was indeed these people who said it to me. I asked for scripture that founded their immoral conviction, and here it is, just for the record:
Quote:
21But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

28Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

32For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
Ezekiel 18
These people are adamant is their deluded convictions that their god will redeem them if they are genuine in their repentance, and it matter not how many people are killed or corrupted. Fundamentalists of any religion are the problem; the literal-minded bigots who use their "holy books" to discriminate, hate, and push their beliefs on others. The world would truly be better place without them, and personally, I couldn't care less about other religious believers as long as they leave everyone else the **** alone.

Doesn't ANYONE else see this sort of thought as being a sample of gross generalization, or is it just me?

If "religion" were just a coping mechanism to help people get through a particularly rough patch in their lives, then why do people "keep" their beliefs when things are going swimingly?

Furthermore, speaking from personal experience, just about every "devout" alcoholic and drug addict eventually rips apart everything they come into contact with, but can the same thing be said of most run of the mill observent Christians, Jews, or Muslims?

For the record, I became a Christian at probably the smoothest running time of my life, and I certainly wasn't looking to adopt a whole new life at the age of nearly fourty one.
I'm glad for anyone who comes to a saving faith in Christ through sobering circumstances, but for me, I'm extra glad that mine wasn't a deathbed-type of conversion---it would have been all too easy to have later laid it off on reaching for the first log that drifted past a drowning man.
My conversion was more thoughtful in nature, and still took about a year and a half to realize after my spiritual awakening began.

Anywho---if this sort of sop were being posted about atheists in a Christian forum, we'd all laugh our cans off at the very least.

And another thing while I'm limbered up.
EVERY atheist/agnostic I've known at one time or another has parroted the line "Religion is responsible for the most____________" fill in the blank with something horrible, yet y'all NEVER weigh whatever that may be in your opinion against all the selfless and wonderfully humanitarian things people have done since time out of mind in the name of Christ at least.
It's a really stupid looking argument against religion in general when you just go at it one sided like that.

Good morning, everyone!

If this is your best understanding of Christian people, then it's understandable why you folks look down on them so much.

It's absolutely wrong, by the way.
