| What? How did you get from mind altering substances to religeon. Having experience in drug/alcohol counseling and haivng a religeon, I can assure you , they are nothing alike. Religeous people deal with reality, too. Just becasue thy have a religeon and you don't doesn't mean that religeon is an altered state. |

| ......um, i dont know about other Christians, but im not a christian because it makes me feel good, religion is not a game.
so, you are generalizing, and that is ather offensive. please try not to do that in the future, blanket statements are almost always incorrect and usually only anger people.

| Alcohol is definitely an escape and ruins lives, where religion can improve lives and make people better human beings. Call it an escape but it works. |

It is true that many people do solve their addictions through going to some sort of organized religion. Hell, even AA requires that a person believe in a 'Higher Power'. While AA is not a religion in itself, you will see that the only answer for a person who is truly addicted is a belief in some sort of God figure, or a seeking thereof. |

| Hello I am not a drinker and never have been. But my husband used to have a drinking problem. I think a lot of people drink because it makes them feel like their problems are gone. But to be honest when sobbering up your problems are still there. You can't run away from them know matter how you try. |

| I agree with riskey58, and it makes no difference what religion you are or aren't. |

I can count the number of times i've been drunk on one hand and can't say it's ever been enjoyable. I just can't stand having anything stopping me from thinking clearly, it's the ultimate violation. The only thing i've found beneficial to it is that it makes being around drunks slightly more tolerable.
My idol, and fellow atheist, Penn Jillette claims to have never tried alcohol or any drugs. He also says that if he goes out to dinner with someone and they even order a glass of wine he'll get up and leave. I dont think i'm going to go to that extreme but i often feel close to it.
I'm still sorta trying to figure out what my own position on the whole thing is, so more opinions and points of view would be great. | I thoroughly agree. Recreational use of drugs such as liquorl and marijuana are done by worthless human beings who as you say- feel the need to escape from reality. The Christian Bible specifically states not to indulge in unnecessary things and that is precisely what recreational use of marijuana and liquor is. It's also a huge ****ing waste of time. |

| Jesus turned water into wine didn't he? Was he a promotion for alcohol abuse or a refreshing libation?
Well it means apparently they are all scum bag mo fo's if I am reading the responses in this thread correctly. I mean back in the days I think almost everyone drank then. Probably the reason the Muslims put it as a sin in the Quran cause of excess.
Using alcohol and recreational drugs are only bad if they are abused in my opinion other than that they can be pretty entertaining. Doesn't matter what belief system you hold to your mind and heart. Excess is never a good thing... Moderation is the key (love you Socrates!)
