What really confuses me are the one that call themselves agnostic jews and still believe in god. I am certainly not a racist but I always tell them the two are not compatible. As for the idea of jews being a race, that would be like me considering myself slavic and distinguishing myself from other white people. I know a lot of people use these words differently but I like to distinguish between race, culture and ethnicity. I once made one of my filipino friends upset at me for making this distinction. I'm right there with you, I don't get it.

Leonard Cohen is a Canadian poet. He is also Jewish.

Cohen once booked himself into a spiritual retreat where he was welcomed by a Japanese guru. The guru told him that, for the duration of his stay, he himself wasn't going to be Japanese and advised Cohen not to be Jewish.

I wish that, in opportune times, it could always be that simple to set aside the differences which separate us.

An interesting and plausible distinction and fully fitting for the forum they were about to engage upon. It is nice, I think, that a person can be distinguished on an individual basis on what they have done not about who they are.

I really don't want this to be a hate the Jew thread but I think the facts should speak for themselves. It's like calling any human racist... it's preposterous if one thinks about it. A RACE can't breed among themselves because they are incompatible... a SPECIES can breed among themselves. A dog and a cat can't breed because the physical DNA through normal physical means says they can't but a chihuahua and a great dane can given the right circumstances, producing puppies. Humans of all cultures and "races" can produce offspring.

In terms of a human; there just is no such thing as racism so it irritates me that people start calling each other racists. I could and wouldn't mind marrying a Jewish woman if she was right for me and I would't think anything about it other than she was from central Asia.

Does that sound right?

I think that you are quite justified in attacking the Jewish religion. I think that its B.S. as well. Be careful, however, not to discriminate against Jewish ethnicity. Not all Jews believe that they are especially the "chosen ones". People are just people. It doesn't matter who you are.

But getting past that the fact is the jewish people have been all over the near and middle east in a relatively short period of time, they were dominated by more than one ruler more than one times and I think that a people who undergo constant subjugation like that end up gaining a very strong sense of self and a very strong sense of dignity. They were able to develop themselves as, We are this people, we went through this because of who we are, and w must never let go of that because if we lost it we would be no better than they. And so their culture developed like this to remember where you came from and to live up to its standards and surpass them to make the future better for a constantly dominated people.
I don't see any problems in a group of people who are devoted to their culture and to their identities and the parts they play in the future of that culture
It's human nature to find acceptance and belonging and when your constantly being shifted around like that strong religious and cultural bonds can't help but be formed.
