| Wearing the Veil Should we allow muslim women to wear the veil? This debate has been raging on for a long time, at least it has been in Britain, so what are your thoughts? Is it a symbol of patriarchal oppression which should be avoided and destroyed, or is it simply a demonstration of faith? |

| I don't see the problem, if women want to wear veils then they should have every right to do so. I don't think it is an oppression, not really a demonstration of faith either, just a requirement of the religion. As for the patriarchal part, I think the Islamic requirements upon men's appearance are equally harsh.
The best attempt to argue against the veil seems to be that "terrorists could wear one." I wouldn't even call this an argument, a suicide bomber would draw more attention wearing one than not. I cannot think of one example where a terrorist used a veil in an attack on "Western" soil. Furthermore the argument could be applied to so many instances, "terrorists could dress up as women, lets ban transvestites." Another argument works on the idea that it is hard to communicate with someone when you cannot see their face. Such people must think that one can tell whether or not someone is lying to them from their facial expressions. Personally I find communicating over the Net or the phone as acceptable as in-person and if people find it hard to communicate to veiled people the best option is not to. Finally there are those (men) who say the veil is intimidating. How grown men can be intimidated by veiled women I don't know. I'm sure those veiled women have better reason to feel intimidated by skinheads, with piercings all over their faces, walking up to them but I don't see them demanding skinheads and piercings be made illegal. |

| But they cannot wear a veli that covers their entire face. That is a security vulnerability! Immagine a man dressed as a veiled woman goes in, robs a store, and as soon as he gets out, the thief takes off the veil and runs away. What do you tell the cops? someone in a ninja outfit stole my store? |

| i thought its not open to personal interpretation - women MUST wear the veil. Period. But ive seen that people dont follow these laws - they make stuff up as they go along.
One of my friends only wears a headscarf when she prays (i was there at her house, she took it off after she prayed). Another of my friends stopped wearing it all-together. |

| Well i am a muslim woman i wear a hijab but not a face veil, a hijab is a requirement but covering the face is optional. I have friends who cover their faces, they say it's for more protection. The scholars differ on the ruling about covering the face. They say in an environment like saudi arabia for example where the culture is that most women cover their faces a woman would stand out if she did not. They also say if a woman has a very beautiful face and gets alot of male attention because of this she would find a face veil as extra protection. I have never heard of a case where a robbery was committed by a man or woman wearing a muslim face veil. Maybe you are talking about robbers wearing stockings over their faces?

| SisterX, someone told me that in the Quran it says that muslim women must cover their hair, because there are "rays" coming from their hair. Do you know what bit of the Quran it is from, and also, would you be able to copy and paste it for me, if what she told me is in the Quran. Thanks in advance. |

I really dont know where yur friend got that from! What type of rays? I think she is just making it up or maybe mis-informed.
There are three verses in nthe Quran that talk about women covering up, here they are: O you Children of Adam! We have bestowed on you raiment to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition. (Quran 7:26)
And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear therof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss. (Quran 24:31).
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful. (Quran 33:59)

| All women are toxic... maybe those men that wrote the Quran are onto something!
Oddly enough those passages are more of a cherishment as they are written there rather than seeking to admonish a woman as a lesser person (they really look like the acts of possessive fathers and spouses but thats just me.(

| I change my position:
No they should not be allowed to wear the veil. It is a sign of religious dominance. |
