Journeyman is on a distinguished road
Default Hello

I am a 36 year old ordained minister, but I recently have resolved to lay down my system of belief. I have read and processed far too much to remained shackled by fear to any type of religion. I harbor no ill will toward the religious and those who choose to follow that path to spiritial enlightenment, but I disdain those who use religion as an instrument of judgement, selfishness, or oppression. I have no claim to ultimate truth and leave room for the existence of God, but as of now I am looking for another occupation. My wife is ordained as well(Not a Fundie though), but does not share my perspective. It really is a great relationship that encourages tolerance and differences. Being an "Insider" is really fascinating by the way. The stories I could share...

Welcome to the Forum:

what made you change your mind? was it a scientific awareness or a spirtual awakening? do you think it might be a "crisis of faith" or have you actually stepped away from ministering?

What "branch" of chiristianity were you ordained in?

You will be able to have great conversations/debates with the people here. There are some who will try to bring you "back to the fold" and others who will give you scientific rhetoric to reinforce your new thoughts.
Enjoy your stay .....Debs

I chose the name Journeyman because there has been no real moment that I chose to alter my perspective. I began in a Christian family, flirted with Athiesm, returned to Christianity, and now I have pretty much solidified my views on religion. The real process of a mature intellectual decision began as I read some amazing Theologians who were trying to accomodate a modern world view and hold onto their faith. Ranging from Process Theology, Liberation Theology, Existential Theology, etc..., unfortunately, it seems as though they were trying too hard and although they created legitimate, or interesting metaphysical systems, they were unwilling to commit to truth as a modern cause and effect system. And by the time their theology was complete, they could not adhere to any classical view of Christianity. So, why not just face the truth?
My daughter knew that Santa did not exist a year before she was officially told. When I asked her why she went along with it she replied, "I thought if I admited he wasn't real and by a slim chance he was, I wouldn't get any presents." Well, I'm not afraid anymore. Does that make sense?
I am always open to new ideas, but as far as being "Brought back into the fold", I can't simply unknow what I know. You know?

Yeah, it's always fun when people try to bring you back to their religion and their way of thinking.

I have a 16 year old, so their own "awakening" into truth is an interesting journey. If you get lucky they talk to you and don't shut you out ..... I haven't had any trouble with teenage rebellion ... I love talking with him about comparative religions and his own beliefs.

I know what you mean about not "being afraid" any longer. It is liberating.

Your step-daughter is a pretty incredible little girl. Well done incidently on how you processed yourself through all the Philosophical and came up with the conclusion that nobody really knows YET! Justifying any universal concept like I think your saying your studys and examinations did takes a whole lot of will and open mindedness. A lot of people just don't have what it takes to say... well something just doesn't feel right! Well Done!

Welcome to a majority of people here who think very similarily to you. Welcome to the Forum!

A fascinating story of faith shift. Bravo for having the courage to give up your career and faith in exchange for a moral and intellectual position you're comfortable with.

Wow, that's exactly how I feel, but I had never used those words to describe it. I like your perspective and your openness to new ideas. Not many clergy are open to new things. YOU ROCK!

Thanks for posting, Journeyman; I'm the same way really. And I agree with you, debdodd, it does feel liberating in a way, but if I'm honest I also feel a little guilty for thinking it and I almost feel like I'm lying to myself.

Read my introduction and you'll see what I mean. I've only been on this site for 15 minutes and already it's making me feel different.

I'm really interested in hearing some of your stories.

You seem like a very intelligent man. I would love to hear some things you think, especially with your knowledge that comes from being a minister. Please, enlighten me.
