One thing I am sure of is that religion causes wars, death, hatred and judgment. So I can reason that if there is a God, then surely he would not want his name or his power used in such ways. This is the very reason I have come to question everything lately.

Not to be presumptuous, but you might want to check out the Freedom from Religion Foundation at
http://ffrf.org/. For the first few years after I rejected Christianity, I took the position that, even though I was no longer a believer, there was no harm, and even some potential benefit, for others who chose to believe.
I still believe that's essentially the case, up to the point where believers attempt to assert their beliefs into inappropriate domains, e.g., politics. Whereas someone who chooses to live his or her life according to Christian principles does no harm, and potentially a lot of good, to others, those who use their purported religious beliefs as a lever to gain political power are capable of great harm to others.
I'm convinced that the wealthiest 1% of Americans, despite their economic power, wouldn't have succeeded in electing George W. Bush in 2000, let alone again in 2004, without the support of fundamentalist Christians. So I hold such fundamentalists measurably responsible for the damage that has been done to this nation over the past 8 years.
Whether the nation at issue is the US, or Iran, or Iraq, or Israel, the interjection of religion into politics is always a very bad idea.
Consequently, I've evolved to the viewpoint that ordinary people like you and me are called on to confront such intrusions of organized religion at every turn.
