Default Hello everyone

I will be more of a lurker/reader than a poster, but I wanted to introduce myself a bit here. I spent my entire life in a religion, that through questioning and more questioning, studying and more studying, I have come to realize did a wonderful job of duping it's membership. I realized that my only views of God/Heaven/Afterlife etc. was brought upon me by the brainwashing of this said religion, and now I am searching for the Truth of life, the universe, and everything. I am now considering myself an Agnostic Theist, in the fact that I realize that nobody can claim to have the perfect knowledge and truth of God, nobody truly can understand all the complexities that life and eternity have to offer, while something inside me can't eschew the idea of a Supreme Being altogether yet.

I look forward to getting to know all of you and hopefully to gain a greater insight into the mysteries inside all of us.

Welcome to the boards, I too consider myself an agnostic-theist. Hope you enjoy your time at the boards!

Neither can I. That's precisely why I'm an agnostic as opposed to an atheist. I've posted myself blue in the face with regard to my contention that there is no such thing as an agnostic theist. It's a contradiction in terms in my opinion.

But I've come to accept such an position as legitimate, but only to the extent that anyone who holds it acknowledges that it's a propositional vs. a final position.

I have to admit to wondering how the universe around us came to be without some kind of "intelligent design". My problem is that, aside from that acknowledgement, I've found nothing substantive to support the concept of an intelligent designer.

Just be aware that, at the moment before your death, you will by definition have adopted a final position on the question based, hopefully, on the empirical or second-hand knowledge you've been able to amass to that point.

After having grappled with this question for many years, not that having done so necessarily means anything other than that I may have missed "the answer" altogether, I don't expect it to be resolved in the course of my lifetime.

Well I myself thought about that for awhile skepti, and realized I was reading too much into the label. While the Agnostic part says you are admitting you do not have the knowledge on the matter, the Theist part only speaks to a belief and not something anyone is claiming to have knowledge of. So while I will be the first to admit I don't have all the answers, I can also say that I 'believe' in something. It's less contradictary than it seems really.

Douglas Adams has already answered the question about "Truth of life, the universe, and everything". THe answer is: 42

I hope we're not too serious on this board. No one on this journey can do this day after day without a smile or laugh.

Because one thing about not believing in a God is what happens when things go horribly wrong for no "reason". Someone dear dies and you have no God to blame it on or comfort you. And suffering with friends who try to comfort you with the traditional God-oriented condolences really misses the mark.

So my rather optimistic view is to laugh as often as I can find the humor.
