| Never Really Been Hello all,
My name is Ryan and I was not raised in a very christian environment. Not saying I wasn't raised happy and healthy but "god" was not a very important part of my life. I have been racking my mind trying to make sense of religion over the past few years of my life and the more I try the harder it seems to make sense to me. So, I come to you with an open mind trying to broaden my spectrum of understanding. Thanks a lot, I'm glad there are resources like this around |

Be that as it may, here we are. You're trying to make sense of religion and I'm telling you, with the benefit of years of trying to do exactly the same thing, that it's a futile exercise.
There's a very fine, but imminently discernible, line between accepting a life view that conforms to what you'd like to believe, and one that conforms to what you know, despite the admittedly narrower range of the latter.

| Absolutely, I feel that life in its self is just a passage into something else ( extremely broad) be it what ever the "be-fitter" see fit.. This said why do you think (with your strict upbringing (some of my closest friend are strict baptists)) people instill suck unbreakable faith in a thing that they cannot see nor feel.... I work in retail sales and in a 6 degrees sort of way it sort of relates when your pushing something intangible such as a service contract that they will only need at certain times when things break down....mid-life crisis and such. Those people are putting unrelenting faith that when the time comes something..anything.. will be there to help/SAVE them and make things all better |

In a way, it's a lot like a service contract, i.e. insurance against the unknowable. When you sign on to life, i.e. when you're born, you soon come to realize that you don't know why you're here or what happens to you when you're no longer here. Even worse, there's no way of knowing these unknowables through the application of the scientific method or any other logical disciplines you may be taught in school.
When you come to those realizations, which might be termed a point of perturbation in chaos theory, you basically have two alternatives. One is to make a jump to a new level of understanding, i.e. figuring that if you really needed to have all the answers to all the questions you'd already have found them. The other is to make a leap of faith and adopt whatever religion or mythology that purports to have all the answers is most handy and convenient and act like it's based on absolute truth.

| ROFL... mainly when I see a person go to church give their "soul" and oh how I love hearing this "adopt Jesus Christ as their own personal lord and savior", feel that they are untouchable in life and they are on the high road to heaven.....
