Default hinduim was not actually a religion

Hinduism is not actually a religion. It is a set of people who followed Vedic traditions and lived in india at a certain time history. That's all. But as the memory and intelligence of people ini Kaliyuga started diminishing on a mass scale many ignaorant people started to use this word.
Actually those who claim to be hindus are actually trying to follow the traditions of Sanatana Dhrama.

See the search in google for "religions of the world" here. religions of the world - Google Search

All the top ranking searches for religions of the world are sites that list hinduism as a religion.

You are but a classic example of the problem with religious zealots. All of them try to make their religion the only viable one by putting down the others.

Growing up, I was fascinated for a while by Hinduism. From what I read, it sure sounds like a religion.

From what I have seen of the people who follow this way of life, religion or not, they seem to be very peacefull and completely comfortable with themselves. So I don't care if they are following the "original" method or ways (who really is after human translation of thousands of years guided by personal views) it works for them and that is what counts.

Maybe we could start by defining what a religion is. In my opinion, organised faith fails its purpose. Maybe not immediately, but sooner or later.

The word Dharma, that rabid activists project themselves as guardians of all the time, means duty. The Gita is often considered a Hindu scripture (so be it). Krishna, in one particular verse says, "One's faith is according to one's nature."

Hence we all follow our own personal religions.

If you want to be religious, enter not the gate of any organised religion. They do a hundred times more evil than good, because they stop the growth of each one's individual development.... Religion is only between you and your God, and no third person must come between you. Think what these organised religions have done! What Nepoleon was more terrible than those religious persecutions? If you and I organise, we begin to hate every person . It is better not to love, if loving only means hating others. That is no love. That is hell! If loving your own people means hating everybody else, it is the quintessence of selfishness and brutality, and the effect is that it will make you brutes.

Hinduism has Gods. Are Gods not a part of a religion? Or are they just tradition?

There are two things. The so called Hindu gods are the Indian sub-continental versions of Aryanic gods. Hinduism is called so because the first Aryans in India settled on the coasts of the Sindhu river. The river itself is now extinct. Later visitors and invaders alike mispronounced Sindhu as 'Hindu' and 'Indu' (Hence the name India).

The reason it wouldn't be right to call this a religion is that Aryanic tribes were more into living and had rituals for everything. Hinduism therefore started off as a set of rituals to define what one should live like. The gods were mostly in illustrative stories and myths.

I am no expert, and I am only telling you things from my school books from long ago, but I feel gods don't form any part of the path to God. They are more like superheroes. Role models, amd examples. Positive, and negative.
