It always has. Then about 2000 years ago (and for the 300 years prior) someone came into the west and tried to do this (communicate that they were god) and they crucified him, then some tried to understand what had just happened, misunderstood, and christianity was born.
The result was a confused system that individuals with rock solid egos tried to manipulate into a control mechanism.
Not to say that this hasn't happened in india with their local or "deshi" priests that resemble our fire/brimstone crazies over here. But one can understand how someone coming from eastern perspective into the west could be mistaken for God incarnate and blow our minds.
