While I'm not much on scriptures, I offer this for discussion. There is some commentary already.

It deals with God awareness while within the body.

A fascinating Gita that I hadn't previously heard of... It reminds me a bit of the Heart Sutra.

I have heard of Advaita before, but didn't really know what it was till now. Thanks!

To declare one's self as God would be offensive just about anywhere in the west.

Eastern thought embraces the concept because there is no personal God like in the Abrahamic religions.

It always has. Then about 2000 years ago (and for the 300 years prior) someone came into the west and tried to do this (communicate that they were god) and they crucified him, then some tried to understand what had just happened, misunderstood, and christianity was born.

The result was a confused system that individuals with rock solid egos tried to manipulate into a control mechanism.

Not to say that this hasn't happened in india with their local or "deshi" priests that resemble our fire/brimstone crazies over here. But one can understand how someone coming from eastern perspective into the west could be mistaken for God incarnate and blow our minds.
