His book is silly. I didn't like it much at all. I put it down at chapter 3 (why there is most probably no god)...

Also, don't get under the impression that yaweh/allah are the only options out there for a God with a capital G. The notions that islam and christianity have generated are hardly distinct from a 3 year old baby. Don't feel that discarding something as silly makes you an atheist. You can be an agnostic and think that christianity and islam and others like them are opiates and that their god is purely a figment of a large number of imaginations.

Or you can be an agnostic and think that because there are so many religions that maybe each contain an element of truth but trying to put all the pieces together is almost if not impossible

A being appears in a spectacular flash of light, right in the middle of my study. It's tangible. I can photograph it, talk to it and record the conversation. It claims to be a god. How would I go about testing such a claim?

Answer: I wouldn't bother. I might cultivate a fine relationship with it, but I'm not in a position to determine if it's telling the truth. Its "true" nature becomes irrelevant. The being might honestly believe that it's the most powerful entity in the universe, but its perspective is also limited by its own perceptions and it could easily be wrong.

I pretty much agree with dawkins, but I still call myself an agnostic. There is so much that is unknown, like og says, agnosticism is just chipping away at the 'non-sculpture'. Plus atheism completely misses the point of religion. Sure, it's not literal fact, but that's such a one-dimensional way of looking at it. Spirituality is perfectly fine.

Atheists and theists agree on the following:

The proposition "there is a god" is either true or false.

I do not share this perspective. Thats why I disagree with dawkins and why I don't call myself an atheist or a theist.

In honesty, I think I prefer not knowing probably because I'd be afraid it would be the Christian god and instead of adding to my life, that would be the day I would feel I lost my freedom.

My father has recommended God is not great by Christopher Hitchens. I've been thinking about getting it.

i think 'knowing' for sure takes some of the mystery out of life. for me at least, the search is what brings value and enlightenment
