What about goddesses? Many religiosn know very powerful goddesses, the church has a virgin who plays a relativly unimportant role. Why is this?

Because Christianity 'grew up' in a male dominated society in which women had little power. There are actually goddess roots (Sophia) in the Jewish/Christian tradition. Some believe the Holy Spirit was originally a goddess.

Depends on how you look at. I would venture to say that she generates more prayers to her than any other figure in Christianity besides Christ and God. And look at how much commerce goes on because of her image showing up all over the place. Many towns have had a good economic boost due to people travelling in to see her image on a wall or in an oil spot or what have you.

I'd say she is pretty powerful.

I grew up in the Catholic faith, and have always thought of the virgin Mary as simply a vessel for Jesus. Now that I think about it, why did Jesus need a mother and father? I could see why he was born as a baby--to seem less threatening to people, but the parent part I don't understand too well.

I've always hated how the bible depicts women. There are several scriptures in Proverbs that warn the man against the "wayward" woman. Here is one example.

24 keeping you from the immoral woman,
from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. Proverbs 6:24

ugh! I'm not a feminist by any means, but come on. Now I'm not saying that there aren't women who "use" men, but more times than not, a woman has sex with a man to try to get him to like her, or maybe to make another man jealous...typically there is a deeper reason for this act than just for the sake of sex. Men on the other hand...they are just different than women, perhaps because of the way they've been raised from the beginning of time, but form my experience, i've met more men who will have sex just because it feels good than women. And then the Bible warns men against the evil woman!! What about us? Shouldn't we be warned about the evil man. But like you said, Christianity and the Old Testament were male dominated socities, so we can see why it was worded the way it was. But if this is the case, to me it seems like this verse could have been written as a form of control. Like, stay away from the evil women...if this is written to control men, perhaps the rest of scripture...all of scripture, could have been written to push people into conforming and accepting particular beliefs out of fear?? in other words it was written to control them. i often question this as well because back during these times not many people could read...so the few who could read and write were able to write whatever they wanted and tell it to the illiterate. I don't know...just some random thoughts...kind of all scattered together.

I do believe that there are both male and female "energies" present in our world, at least in mine. It is impossible for there not to be. But in the surpressed society of maniness women in all aspects have been brushed underneith the rug and hidden in the kitchen only coming out to birth a baby then rushed back in once things are cleaned up. Now that women are finding a voice again I think that the female aspect of this crazy mess we call a world will come back into power again and we will get the respect we deserve.

God was made up back when men looked at women more as property and totally not worthy of any leadership position. In fact women were inferior.
