I'm with Og on this one .... it's all in the brain .... emotions are triggered by the chemicals in your brain. If you see something pleasing your eye sends that pleasing science to your brain where it triggers a chemical reaction, that same if see something repulsive. It's conditioning that makes certain emotions repetitive.

Faith: you are way off base about the love between a mother and a child ... being an adoptive mother I can guarantee that I was not in love with Alex the moment they put him in my arms .... that was about 10 breaths into his life ... it took me longer to love him and now I love him dearly but I remember the day I fell in love with him .... it was chemical and he continued to trigger that chemical response and I would respond the same every time and to this day he can do the same thing and trigger that same emotional response but it is triggered by chemical and conditioning .... 16 years later still the same.

I relate qualia to the spell checker in Microsoft word (word processing tool).

Computer code is loaded into a processor as 1s and zeros and tells transistors how to conduct current and when to conduct current and in what order (your computer). These currents cause a complex series of actions that produce light emission from some light emitting diodes in an array (your monitor).

And all of this physical behavior creates "the spell checker"... Or any other program on your computer. It's all objects. You don't actually delete a file.. You re-arrange charges on capacitors in memory or magnetic signatures on a disk. All of these objects of files and windows and spell checkers and programs and this and that are all internal to the brain and our experience.

Qualia and personality are like the spell checker in MS word. They are part of the behavior of a complex system.

If someone were to see a computer and not know anything about the way a computer behaves, they'd have no way of saying "of course they're the same thing."... It would be like "redness" or whatever qualia is.

So saying it's "just" chemistry doesn't do it justice. Emotions are as amazing as they are and at the same time are the products of chemical reactions. Just like the idea of the spell checker in MS word is a spell checker and it's the complex behavior of currents in transistors and photons from a light emitting diode array.
