Lost in Translation? I was just talking with a friend of mine who became a muslim. He is not very much into religion, but he wanted to share some experiences with his boyfriend who is a muslim living in Saudy Arabia. He has been also studying the religion and was telling me something very interesting. Aparently, and according to the Quram and traditions, the people (men) that fight against evil and become martyrs will be rewarded with 72 virgins in Paradise (I'm not sure about the number of virgins, actually... I had already 2 glasses of wine to remember with so much detail).
Well, when this book was written, dates, as in the fruits of palms, were very valuable trade pieces. When they were like raisins, even better, because they would last longer and represented a little fortune. It turns out that on the original arabic dialect and language they spoke at the time, those "raisin dates" were called also "virgins", and most likely, those "virgins" are the ones that will be ofered in Paradise. Because if you come to think about it, the Islam still today treat women as second class citizens, actually not even citizens! So, why 72 women would be the reward??? What do you think? |
