Default Religion encourages ignorance?

This is another reason why I think the organized religions can be/is a bad thing for society... It encourages people's ignorances.

Default Religion encourages ignorance?

I am not sure if religion outright encourages ignorance. I am sure that there are some deeply seated pockets that seem more fearful of science than anything else.

I think that modern science is really challenging a lot of the long held mythology that religion has taught. That is probably what seems to be the biggest threat in many people's minds because once the myth is challenged then they have to try and reconcile everything else against this new found truth.

It is a very difficult question though. Part of me admits to the fear of trying to play "god" with science given that we do not know yet what the long term effects can be to some of our advancements. What is wrong with letting life go on according to the "natural order of things?"

The other part of me wants to embrace the notion that it would be a waste of talent and possible responsibility to not develop what we can for the betterment of mankind and the planet.

Very interesting article either way.

I have fabricated devices in the premier research fab in the world (Cornell's Nanoscale Science and Technology Facility). If people had the first idea of what nanotechnology was, they would not say such silly things.

You add a layer of material. You take a portion of that layer off. You use a chemical to block part of a surface. You embed ions in silicon. Not much else.

It's glorified photography mixed with machine shop. It is amoral. It's so silly how people fear what they don't know instead of trying to understand.

Want to know what the REAL nanotechnology is? The one that's creating little molecular size robots that fix/change things in our bodies? It's biochemistry and drug discovery. It has nothing to do with what is considered "modern nanotechnology." Nanotech and microfabrication is so benign it's ridiculous.

Unfortunately this is not the only example, a poll of Americans finds that 55% do not believe in evolution. I find this statistic very disturbing because if they ever get their way I will be in the minority and probably rounded up with a choice to repent or face a firing squad

Fortunately for all of you we encourage ignorance. I'm pretty sure you have nothing to fear no matter how many of us religious folks there are, you'll be able to talk your way out of any imbecile firing squad situation.

Alrighty then, welcome to you, too.

Where did this come from, and why make such a statement?

Its in response to William Blue the post above. Anyway my point was that if all we do is encourage ignorance then those of you (open-minded non-believers) who actually have wisdom will rule the world at least on an intellectual plain (kind of like that whole Neitzsche supermen thing) and not really have anything to worry about from the likes of the religious peons. It was a joke...
