Default Sodom and Gomorrah

I thought I once saw something on the History Channel (I believe it was an episode of In Search of...) where someone found a damaged city in the right location underground. I also found this site. What do you think?

Most of religion legends starts with factual events but distorted reasons.

For an instance by the end of the last Ice Age it comes up Ziusudra legend, which the Jews rewrite to Noah. At the meltdown the sea levels had raised and many places were flooded. They did not understand what was going on and where did all that water came from, so they made legends about it on it was God's Wrath.

The same may happened to Sodom and Gomorrah, according to the Bible it was destructed by fire and sulfur; exactly what a volcano throws. So it may be another legend trying to explain a volcano eruption on the region - rare phenomena on Middle East, since it ain't a volcanic region and most likely Jews at the time were clueless about what a volcano was.

If the Middle East isn't a volcanic region, then doesn't that seem like a far-fetched answer?

It's a reasonable theory, nothing else.
