Default Stargate: SG-1

I thought I'd bring up this TV show and really recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. There are 10 seasons which make it the longest running sci-fi next to doctor who. It's also endorsed by the US Air Force (only sci-fi show to be endorsed by a branch of the DoD).

The basic premise is that people enter the stargate which is a tool for intergalactic travel and they go into the universe and fight against alien races that parade as gods to transplanted and developmentally stunted groups of human beings.

Basically, the show is about a group of heros that delve into the human psyche and free our minds from the tyranny of false gods and idols. The show takes place in "present day" with modern technology and the stargate is a device that creates a wormhole that resembles a pool of water when activated.

The pool of water is a universal illustration of the boundary of the subconscious mind (see the work of campbell and jung and dali and many others). The adventures are a lot of fun and most of the seasons (except the last one) star Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver) as the producer and lead character that runs the team (SG-1).

When I began to realize what this show was speaking too, I became even more enthralled than I was before. It seems like the perfect modern myth to speak to the psyche of the developing agnostic. They dive you into the human psyche, teach you about the religions of the world, connect you to isolated cultures (archeology and history) and fight against the suppressing mental components of the religions (false gods) they face. And the gods aren't all evil. Some are helpful and benevolent (kind of like santa claus is for kids).

The show stick to this method for its entire 10 seasons and is an amazing ride of adventure and explosions and humor and awesome sci-fi goodness. Its our modern day stories of arthurian knights and superman or whatever. It's a mythos of the elements of the human psyche delving into the guts of the subconscious supression of religion over the history of mankind with a team of powerful characters that free the universe from the shackles of religious tyranny.

I highly recommend it!

You bring up some interesting and fun stuff about the show but I just can't stand it. Maybe the classic Star Trek cliche (which Star Trek had high-tech to explain so easily) that EVERYONE speaks fluent English. Maybe I missed the episode that explains it but the original movie was really good! I am a major Sci-Fi fan.

I was a big fan of Sliders starring the dwarf from Lord of the Rings. I felt it to be a highly agnostic piece of sci-fi

Are any of the Dune movies any good? The only one I've seen is the one with Brad Dourif as Piter de Vries, and it wasn't very good, but I know the sci-fi channel did Dune-Children of Dune and I wondered if anyone had seen it.

The sci-fi versions are amazing. I love them and got my parents hooked on them. They are really great companions to the book. The one with patrick stewart and sting was nuts.
