Default The Movie '300'

The movie '300' has just came out and it's a very good one
it's inspired by the graphic novels of Frank Miller ('sin City')

What a contrast to the the AWFUL movie 'V For Vendetta' which was shown last year, and inspired by Alan Moore

Alan Moore is just not in Miller's league.
Alan Moore also wrote the 'Watchmen' - didn't like it at all!

So go watch '300'.

Yeah I didn't hear very good things about V for Vendetta either. I think the new Batman Begins was inspired by Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Good Stuff.

Personally I didn't like Sin City all that much but one of my favorite comic series of all time is Frank Miller's Electra: Assassin.

Alan Moore takes a bit of intellectual curiousity to get along with him and I can understand why a lot of people don't like him. I like him... shrugs.

They are both outstanding. Number 6 do you read any Garth Ennis? Awesome Awesome books. His Preacher series is being made into an HBO or Showtime series... something for me to look forward to anyway

I liked mostly the Rourke part, he stole the show.
but you are right, it was too monotone. I barely watched the Bruce Willis story which was basically the Rourke story without the cool physical stuff.
another problem with it, that it is relentlessly grim, eventually you get tired of all the blood and melancholy, a good comic relief was needed.

'300' is much better in that sense, because you get some relief. but I found it ridiculous that the Persians didn't think about trying to burn the phalanx with some ignitable fluid. and that the bad guy carried on him all the gold was also ridiculous.
also is it only me but I think '300' referred to the confrontation between the West and radical Islam (or even Islam) - the Spartans present themselves as bound to LOGIC (i.e enlightenment) and the Persian (come from the Middle East) as irrational mystics. The Persians want to concquer Europe, and only ask that Europe worship THEIR GOD. I think there is something to it.

About Moore - I do detect a bit of Liberal preachiness in him. 'V for Vendetta' is filled with it, or in the 'Watchmen' - killing millions of Newyorkers in order to prevent war just lilke in Hiroshima.
It's a bit too preachy.
he is very innovative however, and his graphic novels are well done. So I do like to read him, but I could do without the preachiness. and I could do with more humor in it also.

As for Garth Ennis - don't know him, I'll check him out.

Actually 300 is 'loosely' based on the real battle that took place between the Persians and the Greeks. I saw a documentry on it... they used the more realistic stuff of course and it was quite astounding. It was 300 Spartans and 1000 Thespians(?) that stood their last stand against the Persians.

Battle of Thermopylae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Interesting stuff. The Greeks were just an AMAZING people all the way around. I am actually looking forward to seeing this movie some day!

Yeah one thing you got to expect from any media is a 'liberal hype' because it is the most 'altruistic' if you pardon the expression and it fits any comic book universe. Killing a bunch of people like in Watchmen well... I think it's just sadistic. Liberal or Conservative it really has nothing to do with anything like that I personally believe. In the end Roschach will fix Ozymandis little red wagon for performing so hideously atrocious of a deed.

If your interested at all in Garth Ennis: Preacher series (interesting and entertaining perspective on Christinaity, God, and Jesus, Hitman series, he even did a Punisher series that the latest movie was based on. He even did a stint on an original series about a hitman hired to assassinate God. The guy is funny, twisted, and violent but on the otherhand he sums up some extreme theological values I think about still from time to time.

I thought the movie was phenomonal.

While it was, as you said, only loosely (very loosely) based on the battle of Thermopylae, it was excellent. It was told like a Greek myth, with all the fantacism and exaggeration that entails. The special effects (with particular emphasis on the fighting) were so ridiculously over-the-top that it was actually very entertaining. It was like watching a live-action comic book. All in all, one of the best films I've seen in a long time.

I don't know how familiar anyone is with the story of thermopylae, but when leonidas meets with xerxes and xerxes tells him to surrender, leonidas says 'come and get them'. They didn't do it as well as they could have in the movie, but it was there.

If anyone has ever wondered what my signature says/means, that is it. It's 'molon labe' in greek characters. If anyone cares.

I saw this on Monday when I got into San Francisco. We were dirt tired (8 hour drive) but saw it at 10pm. Man panties are the best thing next to dead baby legs. I loved this movie. Made me wanna stab and have sex all at the same time. Plus I am a big Gerard Butler fan from back in the anonymous days.
Sigh. drool
