It doesn't matter how they were originally told. The ethnic inflection can be about a literal person/time/event. The underlying elementary idea is what people see in the lives of people like JC. The metaphors (even if they speak to something that originally was considered literal) speak to the nature of the prophet.
The virgin birth is not about a literal birth.. It's about the divine nature of his teachings. It's about a spiritual birth different from the rest of humanity. It's about a psychological transformation.
