Not really. I am actively involved in my kids' schools, but not a teacher or childcare worker. This book offends me as a member of the human race.

One that I cautiously state, To Train Up a Child. I say cautiously because this book had a terrible impact on me. I can't say enough horrible things about it, the authors, or the people who follow the practices contained within.

It may as well. It encourages child abuse in the name of god.

According to the authors, it is never too early to start switching your kids. Infancy is no barrier to hitting with weapons ("switches"). One of the authors admits to burning (but no mark) at least one kid and kicking another into a pond.

It's a book (and an entire industry) that many fundamentalist christians (think dresses only, homeschooling, home churching, man is ALWAYS the head of woman) follow. Once upon a time, I lurked on a support forum for people who adhered to the philosphies espoused in the book. One sicko not only admitted the abuses she inflicted on her own children, but also admitted the cruelties she inflicted on the kids she babysat.

One book that really changed my life is:

Let go and Let God.

It really is not a "religious" book but is an excellent read for anyone who believes that (God, goddess & god, the infinite source or whatever) hears what you ask and helps you get what you need through your thought. If you want something in life all you have to do is focus your thought on getting that something, expect that something and Let go and Let god bring it to you.

Basically, that's what the book outlines.

What a great thread,

I've enjoyed "Mere Christianity" and "Mists of Avalon" before. I am not a christian anymore so I think it would be interesting to read Mere Christianity again with a new perspective. Mists of Avalon got me thinking about the tyranny of christianity and the ancient beliefs of our ancestors, and thinking about they way the belief in a Goddess used to empower women. It is interesting to see how belief systems affect society.

Books that have impacted my life are

The Faith: A History of Christianity

A History of Jews, God, and Israel

Collapse & Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond

"Why God Won't Go Away: Brian Science and the Biology of Belief" by Dr. Andrew Newberg

"Skeptics and True Believers" by Chet Raymo finally put me over the edge. I struggled with the lack of evidence to support supernatural phenomena for years, and I've now come to believe that there are no supernatural phenomena on earth.
