Wink Debating is not one of my strong points

Sorry...I don't know how to use the quote feature yet so here are my comments to your post:

I don't consider the Bible to be just a book of stories. When anyone writes a book they are communicating to whomever might read their book. The Bible is how God has communicated to each of us who believes in Him.

My definition of faith is the belief in something that cannot be seen or proven by our standards. I cannot prove that we have souls but I believe we do.

God exists in my mind as truth, in my heart as my creator, and in my soul as the choice of my eternity.

"If I have to live my life according to what others know and believe to be true, then I am living a life that is theirs and not my own." Quote by Sandra

Very good points there Snadra. In the end it's to each his/her own.

As for the quote feature If you'll look in the bottom right corner of my post here you'll see a button labeled Quote. Simply click that button and you'll be taken to a new entry page with everything I've said here (minus what I quoted from you) already pasted in the body of your message for you.

Simply scroll down to after my message has ended and begin typing. When you hit submit your message will be posted with the quote from my original message.

NOTE: You can also edit my message within your own post and remove all the stuff not relevant to your reply

On a side note Sandra. I noticed you firmly stated what you believe but did not mention why you believe it.

Care to share?

When I was growing up my dad taught me that it was important to tell the truth. So as a young adult I was doing my soul searching to discern what truth I did believe and if it was just because that was what I was taught to believe. Over a period of time I made the decision that I would accept that Christ died for the purpose of salvation to those who believe. I attend church regularly to worship and an adult Sunday school class to learn more about what the Bible teaches about following Jesus and doing the work of God.

In case you are going to ask why I made the decision, it was because I truly believe that we have a choice and so my choice was to believe.

Here is a link that shows some discrepancies in the bible. How can a person say they follow the bible word for word(thinking Christians here) when this just proves there are some areas that arn't right. So technically ALL the bible can't possibly be right.Which of course is what happens when MAN writes it but most religions seem to forget that.

A List Of Biblical Contradictions

But "faith" causes you to still believe in it anyway

Non-Believer: "Hey don't walk over there, there's a big hole and you'll fall in. It's right in front of your eyes!"

Believer: No it doesn't matter what I see, faith tells me I can walk over it so it must be true.
nowhere in the bible does it say "dont trust your perception. i am right. trust the leader, now yourslef" (although mormonism slants over that way a bit). it says the dead opposite. not trying to be mean, just not beating around the bush XD

Why is "repeat after me" implied everywhere? What is the meaning of "say after me" to non-christians? Why is there always a "comply with me" in speach? What makes juxtaposition with speach so important? What are the correct parallels made in thought and diatribe? Why are we discerning correlation?

I am going to lambast you, so allow me to retort. The bible is a book that was written in order to cover the supposed birth of Christ. If and when the birth of Christ happened, then he lived and died. I was taught in highschool (christian highschool) that the bible was written 40 years after Christ's death. So we take the bible to be a book that can be referenced, not a death manual for blood bath. The Old Testament was stolen from the Torah and re-organized in order to make the New Testament a popular read. One would have to be popular to read it. There is no God in anyone's heart, oh and by the way, I would like for you to read my post: http://www.agnosticforums.com/evolut...schools-5.html

This should clear the makings of divorce in your mind!

Also in reference to the part about living your life according to what others know and believe, I would like for you to read my post:http://www.agnosticforums.com/evolut...intings-2.html

Why you may allow for yourself to know love...

Actually, there are a lot of texts that are as old or older. Check out the Internet Sacred Text Archive. It’s a great resource for the texts of religions and spiritualities alive and dead, as well as texts and literature from ancient cultures (and a few more modern texts as well).

But just off the top of my head:

The texts of Hinduism as someone already mentioned (and which is generally regarded as the oldest organized religion still practiced), the Tipitaka of Buddhism, the Tao Te Ching of Taoism, the I Ching of many Chinese spiritualities, the Gathas of Zoroastrainism (which had a lot of influence on Judaism and Christianity). And this list is just religious texts that are still in use. There are a lot of strictly religious texts from “dead” religions as well as literature and stories from ancient civilizations. Gilgamesh, the Ancient Sumerian epic, is considered one of the oldest, if not the oldest stories ever written (third millennium BCE). The Iliad and Odyssey are still widely read today (and even turned into movies) and date from the seventh or eighth century BCE.

So yeah; your teacher was incorrect.

As a side note, the Bible read today isn’t even 2000 years old. But that’s a whole different discussion.
