Joseph "Dirty Harry" Smith who founded the mormons carried a gun and was killed in a shootout with the authorities, killing two of them in the process because they wanted to arrest him for having at least 35 wives. Huh! some "prophet"..
The rest of the Mormons fled to Salt Lake City, led by Brigham Young (who had at least 55 wives).
I often wonder whether Smith used to drum up new members for the mormons by firing shots into peoples front gardens, then wave his gun in their faces when they came out and say "I know what you're thinking punk, did he fire all six or has he got one left.. now sign up on the dotted line and make my day.."
Incidentally Smith was a dead ringer for Elvis, i bet his wives found his pelvis irresistible..

I actually used to be mormon, and I rejected christianity for many of the same reasons I rejected mormonism. And while you are mainly correct about Joseph Smiths death you are wrong about why he was arrested - he was arrested for destroying a press that was going to expose his secret polygamy, and although some in the mob that came to kill him might have wanted to kill him for his involvement in polygamy, many more just didn't like how he played with his non-mormon neighbours. As for the rest of your post about how Joseph got converts, you're dead wrong.

Finally, Mormonism, while not true and certainly with its faults is no mickey mouse belief system. It's actually quite complex and sophisticated compared to your average evangelical beliefs and many of its adherents take their beliefs much more seriously than I've seen some professed Christians take theirs.

Many religions have just as much (if not more) to offer as Christianity. And many of them stand on better historical ground.

Okay I'll join any religion that meets the following two conditions -
1 - It has the Son of God in it
2 - It says anything better than this -
"Love God and your neighbour, this is the whole law,
Love one another, love your enemies,
bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you,
greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends,
Hungry and you fed me,
Thirsty and you gave me drink,
A stranger and you took me in,
Naked and you clothed me,
ill and you tended me,
In prison and you visited me.
When you did this to others,
you did it to me.
You're my friends if you follow me, I don't call you servants, I call you friends.
In my fathers kingdom are many mansions,I'm going on ahead to get them ready for you, then come back to take you there with me" - Jesus of Nazareth

Whether we use maxims, quotes or slogans these are all good supports for us to keep us going in the right or wrong direction with our lives. I think it was a fellow named Pseudo-Isocrates that said, "For as it is the nature of the body to be developed with appropriate exercise, it is the nature of the soul to be developed by moral precepts."

Surely there's a way to make a point without having to throw it back in their faces...=/

Ha ha ha you gotta be kidding
The Bible consists of 66 separate books cataloguing mankinds interaction with entities over thousands of years and you find it boring??
Hey Ezekiel tell us about that time near the river -
"Near the River Chebar I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north-an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. I fainted but one said - Get up human, i want to talk to you.." (Ezekiel 1:4)

NASA engineer Josef Blumrich wrote a book about it, here's a pic of the craft -
EARS - The Bible Files 1: Ezekiel's Wheel

Incidentally not all UFO's are saucer-shaped, there's a variety called "rods" -
Rods

"I see a flying scroll" ( Zechariah 5:1-4)

I'm not gonna speak for Vfr. But I personally don't find the bible boring at all. It's great for moral guidance and such, but I'm not convinced that it's more than a story. I can't help but to think logically, so I can totally understand why the bible helped Vfr become an agnostic.

You can make your point all day long, doesn't mean it'll get through to them. I imagine, and I only type this because you're talking about those that "can't think for themselves", that they consider the word of God to be their own; no arguing with God, right? Besides, if they bring religion in to the equation, shouldn't I be free to bring in my own beliefs? Have they not opened the avenue for it? o.O;
