Default Moral right & wrong w/o God?

(I suggested this forum so I guess I should kick it off

For some time I have been trying to formulate a personal moral code w/o basis in the traditional religious teachings. Is this possible or a futile exercise?

For reference here is a link with George Carlin's take on the ten commandments...
GEORGE CARLIN ON THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

So can we start with something like:

"Respect others" or "Live and let live"

Though I think we need a bit more detail for the average citizen:

1. Don't hurt or kill others.
2. Don't steal.
3. Don't lie.

One of the problems I have with this list is they are all negatives. Can we add 2 or 3 "do's"?

Any thoughts?
