Way way back in the late 1970's, I read a book called The Monkey Wrench Gang by (I believe) Edward Abbee. It was about a group of four or possibly five people who took it upon themselves to be environmental activists, long before environmental activism came into vogue. They rode around at night sawing down billboards in the desert, performing creative sabotage etc etc and it really opened my eyes to the harm that was coming to our environment even at that time. It changed the way I thought about being environmentally conscious and it was a darn good story to boot. |
