Personally I didn't like Sin City all that much
I liked mostly the Rourke part, he stole the show.
but you are right, it was too monotone. I barely watched the Bruce Willis story which was basically the Rourke story without the cool physical stuff.
another problem with it, that it is relentlessly grim, eventually you get tired of all the blood and melancholy, a good comic relief was needed.

'300' is much better in that sense, because you get some relief. but I found it ridiculous that the Persians didn't think about trying to burn the phalanx with some ignitable fluid. and that the bad guy carried on him all the gold was also ridiculous.
also is it only me but I think '300' referred to the confrontation between the West and radical Islam (or even Islam) - the Spartans present themselves as bound to LOGIC (i.e enlightenment) and the Persian (come from the Middle East) as irrational mystics. The Persians want to concquer Europe, and only ask that Europe worship THEIR GOD. I think there is something to it.

About Moore - I do detect a bit of Liberal preachiness in him. 'V for Vendetta' is filled with it, or in the 'Watchmen' - killing millions of Newyorkers in order to prevent war just lilke in Hiroshima.
It's a bit too preachy.
he is very innovative however, and his graphic novels are well done. So I do like to read him, but I could do without the preachiness. and I could do with more humor in it also.

As for Garth Ennis - don't know him, I'll check him out.
