My name is Dave and I'm 20. Pretty sure that I've gone through about every faith under the sun. I was raised in a Christian house, and while I don't have anything against anyone's beliefs, within the past few years I couldn't help but notice the hypocrisy of 2 of my family members. They both always use the infamous phrase, "well the Bible says it".
Yeah, well what about what the Torah says? Or what about the Koran? They both also tend to follow what's convenient for them rather than follow the Bible word for word which is what they tend to preach to me. I feel Jesus existed as a historical person, but I'm not sure about whether he was anything more than just a good man or not. Since deciding Christianity isn't exactly for me, I haven't made up my mind when it comes to what I'd like to follow from now on. I think I'll always believe in an afterlife and a higher power one way or the other, but for the time being, I can't say I have a "religion".
Glad to be here. |
I wish I had a nickel (no, make that a thousand dollars) for every introduction by someone who characterizes themselves as a former Christian. I realize the number of such individuals, at least within the confines of this forum, isn't statistically significant in the macro sense of things, but it sure
feels significant.
I've followed a similar path from a fundamentalist Christian upbringing, through an awakening, and finally, to the existence I currently enjoy as an agnostic who demands a bit more than some feel-good premise for the basis of his operating beliefs.
If I could enumerate a dictum for approaching life and figuring out what to believe in, it would be something like, "If it doesn't make sense, don't spend any more time on it."
