I'm not 100% certain, but you might be referring to Marcionism. But they were not the only ones who advocated this position; various Christian sects have suggested either disposing of the OT entirely, or relegating it to a position of "historical interest" only.

I suspect that, if you ask a lot of modern Christians of the "liberal" sort, they'd probably agree that the OT is not really all that important to them, that they could do without it. Liberal Christian thinkers like Bishop Spong certainly de-emphasize it (much to the chagrin of fundies, who hate him for it).
