I believe in cases like this the only explanation is there is evil out there. We always need an explantion for everything and sometimes the only answer is evil or in cases of a more happier ending divine intervention. We would like to think she was completely out of her mind which I am sure was the end result but again somethings defy logic and reason good or bad.
