I think most people in the west have a lot of respect for the Jewish people, especially in terms of the arts, science and commerce. GiT alluded to the disproportionate accomplishments (I'm surprised nobody took him up on being superior...

) They may even have a begrudging respect for Zionism, how Israel has managed to hold on despite its neighbours avowing to push them in to the sea. Though I think many do have concerns that Israel's current tack it is taking with its immediate Arab neighbours.
In terms of sympathy there are many 'ancestries' that deserve sympathy. One that comes to mind is the Cathars ... and that was Christian on Christian! I cannot think of a major culture that has not been in some way responsible (Exceptions that come to mind are Amish, Dukabour, Cathars, JWs, there are probably eastern ones too)
