I have fabricated devices in the premier research fab in the world (Cornell's Nanoscale Science and Technology Facility). If people had the first idea of what nanotechnology was, they would not say such silly things.
You add a layer of material. You take a portion of that layer off. You use a chemical to block part of a surface. You embed ions in silicon. Not much else.
It's glorified photography mixed with machine shop. It is amoral. It's so silly how people fear what they don't know instead of trying to understand.
Want to know what the REAL nanotechnology is? The one that's creating little molecular size robots that fix/change things in our bodies? It's biochemistry and drug discovery. It has nothing to do with what is considered "modern nanotechnology." Nanotech and microfabrication is so benign it's ridiculous.
