Default Religion encourages ignorance?

I am not sure if religion outright encourages ignorance. I am sure that there are some deeply seated pockets that seem more fearful of science than anything else.

I think that modern science is really challenging a lot of the long held mythology that religion has taught. That is probably what seems to be the biggest threat in many people's minds because once the myth is challenged then they have to try and reconcile everything else against this new found truth.

It is a very difficult question though. Part of me admits to the fear of trying to play "god" with science given that we do not know yet what the long term effects can be to some of our advancements. What is wrong with letting life go on according to the "natural order of things?"

The other part of me wants to embrace the notion that it would be a waste of talent and possible responsibility to not develop what we can for the betterment of mankind and the planet.

Very interesting article either way.
