MJ ...... I think "just" is a unnecessarily limiting word. I agree religion has and can be used for control..... but the 'only' purpose?
I tend to agree in part with Joseph Campbell's interpretation of myth (and therefore religion) and its purpose....
assp a awe ..... help develop a sense of awe mystery regarding the universe, I think we all have this to some greater or lesser degree.
s science.... provide an explanation of the universe and how it works. Obviously painfully inadequate and for the large part wrong at least in the literal sense.
s society ..... provide a framework for society's rules. This is where I think the control aspect of religion might/can come in.
p psyche .... provide an insight in to the nature of human kind and perhaps the philosophy of our existence.
But your sentence is correct otherwise - for some people religion is a method of control, as is sex, bribery, Glock, flattery, ....... but these cannot be be prefixed just by
just???
