The "we" that would change the chemical signatures is comprised entirely of chemical signatures. So, sure, we could change the chemical signatures. But that would be chemical potentials changing state to alter other chemical potentials.
You would repeat thoughts or actions because you have a desire to do so. This desire is the product of a confluence of other chemical patterns in a brain containing 100 billion neurons each averaging between 1000 and 10000 connections to other neurons.
There are about as many neurons in your brain as there are trees in the amazon rain forest and about as many connections between neurons as there are leaves on trees. Each connection is a complex biochemical machine capable of changing its state through analog levels.
All the glory and beauty and amazing nature of emotion and love and all of that is all expressed in this unfathomably complex network between your ears. Furthermore, just because your skin doesn't enfold my neurons doesn't mean that we are fundamentally different.
In the same way that your cells communicate with one another through chemical signals, your mouth/throat cells create vibrations that propagate to another set of ear cells that transduce the signal into that other brain.
Connections between humans may not be as steady as connections between neurons in your brain, nor as chemically stable, but that doesn't mean they're fundamentally different.
You, I, no distinction.
