I think the author was simply trying to be funny, but one never knows, do one? I wouldn't call it an attack, but definitely mockery. The girl that gave me the link is a very devout Mormon, though, and she thought it was amusing.
I find that people are angry with religion for some reason. Exactly as you say, as if religion has done something to them.
It doesn't bother me either. I'm pretty laid back and I like for people to do what makes them happy, and if praying or worshipping something does that, then so be it. The only problem I have is if someone tries to force it down my throat. Or if they are just incredibly annoying.
But, yes, I really don't understand why everyone is so mad at religion.
