Sorry, but I just can't let that kind of mindless diatribe go unchallenged any longer, even if you're just kidding (your are just kidding, right?). Otherwise, it's such a Minimus reply from someone who calls himself Maximus.
If you are just kidding, then I guess I rose to the bait. If not, I'm sorry to say it wouldn't suprise me. There are a lot of sheep taking their cues from the likes of Rush Limbaugh, et. al.
If you listen long enough (more than a few seconds), you'll hear all about this huge liberal conspiracy to completely do away with democracy as it's come to be known in this country. But what I've never heard a viable explanation for, is why? What's in it for the left wing to bring about the collapse of democracy, even if we could?
It's easy enough to see what's in it for the conservatives to attempt to silence the liberals. Once that's done, then they can go about their schemes to get rich without all the pesky reminders that the less-privileged in this first-world country are living in third-world conditions, with no hope of anything better.
Do the conservatives care? (I think I just heard you say you don't, by damn!) Only enough to offer some ear-soothing platitudes about compassionate conservatism, faith-based social services, and other empty phrases like no child left behind. Of course, what all that translates to is "I'll be compassionate as long as it doesn't cost me anything"; "Churches will keep the indigent off the streets while we pour billions into an unjustified war which we can only lose"; and "Let's pretend we really want some poor black or hispanic kid competing with our kids' Ivy League educations".
Those kinds of platitudes are useful, because they sound just good enough to keep the lid on the simmering frustration of poor people who are living under the promise of the American dream while firmly trapped in a nightmare.
As a liberal who tries to keep his eyes open, I know it's just a matter of time before there's a revolution. (I can hear you now: "See, I knew the guy was a commie! But revolutions occur in contexts other than Belshevik or Cuban. They occur at any time just plain folks trying to make a living and maybe get a little ahead finally understand that the powers that be just ain't gonna let it happen. (Seems like I remember something about that from my American history class.)
But whether there's an impending revolution or not, I'm concerned because it just ain't right for citizens of the greatest nation on the face of the earth to be suffering when we have so much. A lot of people refuse to think that they could very easily be in the same situation, but I know I could if it weren't for some careful planning and extraordinary luck.
If you can't admit that to yourself (is your last name Gates or Buffett?), then be concerned for no other reason than that history teaches that the people will rise up when pushed to their limits. If you want to avoiod the revolution, dig a little deeper into your shallow heart and try to find some real caring and compassion that means a little more than words that are worth no more than the breath it takes to utter them.
