I think the basic idea of morality has to do with community as an evolutionary survival technique.
I would define community as organisms of a species combining abilities and resources to enhance survival of the indiviual organism and, in turn, the species as a whole. The species benefits from a healthy organism and the organism benefits from a healthy species.
Humans have to combine abilities and resources to survive, if for no other reason, propagation. For this interaction between organisms to occur, there has to be a predictable and inherant understanding between participants of how the process of interrelating is going to work.
Therefore, I believe the root of morality is the shared understandings of interrelations amongst a community all for the benefit of improved survival.
