I wouldn't say I hate them. I find them to be quite fascinating and could discuss them for hours on end. And I agree, they can most certainly be a positive driving force as well. It is a very dynamic concept.
As for insperation to create - have you seen the movie "Seven"? Great flick. Kevin Spacey's "John Doe" character blew my mind.
