This is untrue. If you hate your neighbor and your family and life, you are the only one that can be jesus' disciple. You don't need to feel sorry for it, you need to revel in the fact that you hate these people.
(This is the wrong interpretation, but this is a neat example of something a literalist must deal with

)
As a side note, the value of the above verse is very buddhist. It's all about non-attachment to the things in your life. Only then can you follow jesus' path of enlightenment and bliss. When the things in your life no longer control you. Only then can you truly enjoy them and be happy.
