As far as flying is concerned I recommend alcohol, it makes the time go quicker and takes the edge off the terror.

As far as reading is concerned I would like to do a bit of tub thumping for Neil Gaiman. Apart from the fact we have three second cousins in common he is hilarious. Good Omens is a masterpiece co-written with Terry Pratchett. And Anansi Boys might make you forget the theoretical impossibility of flying.

For historical fiction go for The Walled Orchard by Tom Holt. Again he is highly amusing but also a bit of a clever dick too.
